Why do foreigners need a type D visa to Ukraine?
Without a specific visa (type D), a foreigner or stateless person cannot obtain a residence permit in Ukraine. The visa subtype must correspond to the basis for applying for a residence permit in Ukraine.
For example, if a visa is needed for obtaining a residence permit through marriage, the foreigner must obtain a D-14 visa. If the basis for obtaining a residence permit in Ukraine is employment, a work visa of type D-04 is required.
Why is a Type C visa to Ukraine required?
Citizens of certain countries cannot visit Ukraine without first obtaining a Type C visa.
One can check if a foreigner requires a Type C visa to enter Ukraine on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Find the country of citizenship, and if the "Holders of ordinary passports" column states "visa", obtaining a Ukrainian visa is mandatory.
How can a foreigner obtain a visa to Ukraine?
To apply for a visa to Ukraine, one must collect a set of documents, complete the visa application form, schedule an appointment at the Embassy/Consulate of Ukraine abroad or at a VFS Global visa center, and personally submit the passport and documents at the scheduled time.

Can a visa be obtained online in electronic form?
It is currently not possible to obtain an electronic type D visa for Ukraine. It is also not possible to apply for a visa online.
However, the visa application form itself is generated online and in electronic form. Additionally, updates on the visa application process can be accessed online via a personal account on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is possible to obtain an electronic Type C visa online; however, it should be noted that such a visa will be valid for up to 1 month and this option is available only to citizens of certain countries. Read more about the e-visa in our article.
What is the visa fee for obtaining a visa to Ukraine?
The base cost of any visa to Ukraine is 65 USD. However, for some countries, special visa fee rates apply based on reciprocity. These rates can be found at the provided link.
If a visa is needed urgently, the visa fee must be paid in double.
How quickly is a visa issued?
According to legislation, a visa to Ukraine is processed within up to 10 working days under the standard procedure and up to 5 working days under the expedited procedure. In many cases, when paying the double visa fee for an urgent visa, it can be issued within 1 working day.
Are there specific requirements for obtaining a visa for citizens of different countries?
According to the regulations for visa issuance for entry into Ukraine, there is a list of countries whose citizens must apply for a visa only in their country of citizenship or in their country of permanent residence.
Additionally, citizens of these countries undergo additional verification by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), which may extend the document processing time. Sometimes processing can take more than 1 month.

Can I obtain a residence permit in Ukraine with a Type C visa?
No, a residence permit can be issued only if a Type D visa has been previously obtained. If you already hold a Type C visa but, for example, have entered into a marriage or signed an employment contract in Ukraine, you must first travel abroad and obtain the appropriate Type D visa to get a residence permit. Only after this can you return to Ukraine and submit the documents for a residence permit application.
